42, in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, is the "Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything", calculated by a supercomputer. Artificial intelligence is useful in many areas as it helps solve problems more efficiently, i.e. ensure better treatment in hospitals, optimize urban traffic, improve business processes, improve safety etc. The possibilities are virtually endless.

Artificial intelligence is already a part of our daily lives
Research on whether an intelligent, learning system can be created, which will be able to change the operation based on the information and experience gathered, has been conducted since the production of the first computers. Slovenia has a long history of AI research. At the Jozef Stefan Institute, AI research began in the early 1970s, and this year Slovenia will establish the first International Research Center on Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO (IRCAI). The Center will provide an open and transparent environment for artificial intelligence research and public policy support in the preparation of AI policies and action plans.
When life is shaped by an algorithm
We are not even aware of that, but practically every step of our life is shaped by an algorithm. We can find them in our homes, cars, smart phones. The programs help doctors making diagnoses, decide on purchases and sales on the stock market, detect financial and insurance frauds and even help judges in making decisions. When shopping online, algorithms offer us products that we may be interested in. And they often get it right.
